Mantas swim with the big fishes at provincial meet

The Burnaby Mountain Mantas swim club placed fifth at the B.C. Summer Swimming championships.

The small North Burnaby club won a total of 32 medals, including 13 individual and three relay gold medals, to top all Simon Fraser region clubs at the threeday meet at Spani Pool in Coquitlam last week.

Hannah Cui, Harvey Lee and all-year swimmer May Li led the medal parade for the Mantas.

Lee won the Division 4 boys' 50-metre butterfly and 50 and 100m freestyle, while also placing runnerup in the 200m individual medley.

Cui had four solid swims in Div. 2, winning both the 50 and 100m free, while placing third in the 50m fly and fourth in the 100m IM.

Li earned four medals in the Category 2 group, winning the 50m fly and 100m backstroke, and placing second in the 100m fly and 200m IM.

Sayla Briggs won a pair of gold in the girls' 50m free and breaststroke Div. 4 races. Briggs also teamed up for a bronze in the medley relay with Elva Yu, Shalynn Lee and Lauren Sartori. Sartori won a bronze in the Div. 4 girls' 100m breast.

David Hibberd dominated the Div. 8 freestyle finals, taking first place in both the 50 and 100m sprints.

Bryan Yu and Kevin Nickerson added three runner-up medals apiece to the Manta medal haul.

Yu won silver in the Div. 5 boys' 50 and 100m fly and 200m IM, while Nickerson finished behind Hibberd in freestyle and also picked a third medal in the 100m fly.

Hibberd and Nickerson also shared in gold with Sean Nugent and Ciaran McDonnell in the free and medley relays.

Ethan Xue won individual gold in the Div. 5 boys' 50m free and silver in the 100m back. Xue, Yu, Lee and Colin Lai teamed up for gold in both the 200m free and medley relays.

Vincent Chung won two silver medals in Div. 7, taking second place in the 50 and 100m fly. Chung won a silver in the free relay with Aaron Cheong, Jun Shong Liu and Jun Jay Liu.

Div. 3 swimmer Octavia Lau led the Burnaby Barracudas to 12th place at the provincial championships.

Lau won the girls' 50m free and also brought home three bronze medals in the 50m fly, 100m free and 100m IM. Lau also teamed up with Deanna Dang, Maria Sulaver and Lauren Chong for two more gold in the 200m free and medley relays. Sulaver earned an individual gold in the 50m breast. Dang and Chong made finals in the fly and breast, respectively.

Leo Chen won a pair of gold in Div. 6 boys' 100m breast and 200m IM. Chen, along with Randy Ho, Ricky Dang and Montavi Kidd, added two bronze medals in relays to the 'Cudas medal chest.

Jakub Vincalek finished first in the Div. 7 boys' 100m breast. Vincalek also shared a silver medal in the medley relay with Marco Elezovic, Brian Huynh and Henry McKenzie.

Rowan Cheung was another multi-medallist, winning a silver medal in the Div. 4 boys' 50m free and a bronze at 100m. He also won relay gold in freestyle with Garrett Yeo, Nicholas Tran and Edward Wong and a silver in the medley with Yeo, Wong and Kurtis Li. Yeo picked up an individual bronze in the 50m breast.

Nicole Ticea and Paige Catlin both picked up silver medals in the Div. 4 100m back and Div. 6 100m breast, respectively.

Chris Toy won bronze in Div. 8 in the 50m fly.
