Burnaby Mountain wrestlers on Cup podium

Four Burnaby men on podium in three weight classes, including a win at 57 kilograms

John Pineda of Burnaby defeated Saskatoon’s Dylan Bray in the senior men’s 57-kilogram final at the recent Canada Cup wrestling tournament in Guelph, Ont.

The Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club grappler defeated Bray 10-0 in the final to finish the competition without a single point scored against him.

Burnaby’s Darthe Capellan placed fourth at 57 kg. The St. Thomas More Collegiate grad won three matches on the consolation side of the draw before losing the back-door final on points to Alfredo Gomez of Cuba.

Aso Palani was a runner-up in the senior men’s 61kg final to Michael Asselstine of Bears Wrestling Club. The former Douglas College wrestler advanced to the final following a 10-8 win over Jason Buckle of Hamilton.

Jasmit Phulka also placed second in the men’s 86kg final to Cuba’s Yurieska Queralta at the international meet. Phulka defeated Connor Evans of Australia 10-2 to earn a spot in the final.

Burnaby Mountain club wrestlers finished just off the podium.

Stacie Anaka finished in fourth place in the women’s 63kg division. Darby Huckle also came fourth in the women’s 48kg group. Aliocha Perriard was fifth at 55kg.
