Remembering a bright light

Dear Editor:

My daughter - who is in Grade 12 and attends New Westminster Secondary School - and I were discussing a name suggestion for either the new elementary or middle school that is to be built in the City of New Westminster.

Please consider the naming of one of our new schools to be "The Amanda Todd Elementary" or "The Amanda Todd Middle School."

New Westminster School District is asking for ideas from the community on naming two new schools in the city. With the recent and tragic suicide death of Amanda Todd and the sadness that this has brought to many students and parents alike may we suggest naming one of the schools after a young girl who was such a bright light that burnt out at such a young age.

My daughter saw the video clip of Amanda Todd's sad story in her creative writing class and was moved to tears and emotion yesterday.

My daughter is involved in Rock Solid, and the timing of this suicide, while being involved in the upcoming presentation on anti-bullying, has left a strong impact on her and her fellow students in the community.

For many years we have named schools after pioneers in the city; may I suggest that naming one of the schools after such a young life that was lost to bullying be considered for us all to remember and perhaps change and prevent this type of loss of such a young girl with a future that ended at such a young age.

Perhaps we can prevent and send a message that will last for years to come.

Thank you.

Gloria Woodward Ellard, New Westminster
