Voter turnout saddening

Dear Editor: Ingrid Rice's cartoon (The Record, Nov. 23) seems to hit the nail on the head. It is sad that so few partake in their right to vote, so much apathy when there's an opportunity to vote in new faces and fresh ideas.

Dear Editor:

Ingrid Rice's cartoon (The Record, Nov. 23) seems to hit the nail on the head. It is sad that so few partake in their right to vote, so much apathy when there's an opportunity to vote in new faces and fresh ideas.

Scott Larsen (Why did Crosty lose?, Letter to the Editor, Nov. 23) should check previous elections: for some reason the Quayside has had little turnout no matter who runs. For a community this size, one answer may be that small towns next to larger cities tend to be bedroom communities.

I for one realize when moving to New Westminster and working in Vancouver I wasn't a participant. But eventually I got involved with the Quayside Board, and with James Crosty at the helm it was a great bunch of dedicated people looking out for the best interests of the Quayside community. And still it is hard to get people involved.

New Westminster has a great history and the most interesting heritage buildings, most being kept to their original state such as the beautifully redone B.C. Electric building. In turn the city had the "InterUrban" keep the flavour. Although hindsight now: how did we get a cement wall on Columbia Street and now we are getting a glass building? Where's a brick when you need one?
