Trucks are a safety hazard

Dear Editor:

Here we go again. Another semi-trailer overturned or drove into the car ahead of him, frequently killing the driver. The semi-trailer driver gets out of his truck without so much as a scratch. This problem is increasingly getting worse, and nothing seems to be done about it. Why not use our vehicle testing stations for trucks only? Never mind the cars. That problem has pretty well been solved.

Many years ago I operated a weigh scale for the City of Surrey. Frequently a cop would come and observe the trucks. Many had bald tires, no brakes, were grossly overloaded, etc. Some were in such poor condition that they had to be towed away.

Doesn't the mayor and council realize that overloaded trucks are very hard on the roads and very difficult to control. I have driven on the freeway and was followed by a tractor and trailer right on my bumper! Intersections are the worst. They drive right through a red light and just honk the horn!

I would estimate that out of 10 vehicles, seven are not road safe. This has been a major problem for many years, and I think it is about time this problem was fixed. Don't just check for a few weeks, but keep at it.
