Dear Editor:
Re: New West cops crack down on commercial vehicles, Record online, Feb. 14
Reading these numbers and seeing the danger on our roads in New Westminster makes me cringe. Almost 40 per cent of the heavy truck traffic that passes through our city (obviously on to other destinations) have been taken out of service or towed in a recent police safety crackdown.
How much longer do we need to put up with this transient danger on our community streets? Why are we just settling for inspections, but no real long-term dialogue with senior government and neighbouring municipalities? Everyone seems to want to play the "blame game" but with no hard (and sometimes painful) solutions.
Is everyone just playing it safe considering this is a municipal election year? Are they waiting for after November?
