Teachers deserve respect, parity

Dear Editor:

Re: Teachers expect too much, Letters to the editor, The Record, May 9.

It is true that other provinces in Canada are currently in contract negotiations with their teachers. It is also true that teachers in other provinces are ratifying agreements offering lower wage increases than what teachers are seeking here in B.C.

What Mr. Sawchuck conveniently fails to mention, however, is that not only are B.C. teachers coming off three years of zero wage increases, but that most of the other provinces in this country already pay their teachers more than B.C. does, even though B.C. has the highest cost of living in the country!

Parity with other teachers in the country, and respect for the fact that teaching is a difficult job, should not be too much to expect.
