Dear Editor:

Re: Mayor votes with anti-coal metro directors, The Record, June 19.

At the May 13 New Westminster town hall meeting regarding the proposed transferring of coal at Fraser Surrey Docks , Mr. Jeff Scott, president and CEO of Fraser Surrey Docks, spoke at length trying to assure the audience that in spite of the company's own website stating, "the facility will provide for a short-term stockpile of up to 30,000-metric tonnes (two trains) in case of a supply chain delay," there will be no stockpiling of coal at the docks.

Now Mr. Scott is saying that though there will be provisions made at the site to stockpile coal if necessary, he is "very confident" coal stockpiling will not be required. I do not believe that Fraser Surrey Docks would address the issue of stockpiling coal unless it anticipates a forseeable need for stockpiling. Given the problems which assuredly will occur in a supply chain operation of this magnitude, I am "very confident" that stockpiling of coal will be necessary at Fraser Surrey Docks

A pile of 30,000-metric tonnes of coal sitting on the Fraser Surrey Dock , exposed to the wind and rain for an undetermined length of time, will assuredly produce coal dust and toxic runoff. This is a situation that is unacceptable to me. I do not want this blight across the river from my home.
