Saying no to trustee run

DEAR EDITOR:

I would like to thank all the individuals who encouraged me to put my name forward as a school trustee for the upcoming election. I have, however, decided not to run.

In reviewing the decision not to put my name forward, I must say at the outset that I have the greatest respect for the elected officials taking on the task of public life and for those willing to put their names forward to run in the upcoming election.

At the time I was a trustee, my wife Judy and I had three sons in the New Westminster school system, Chad, Travis and Carson.

After graduating from NWSS, our sons went on to graduate from SFU with degrees: Chad in quantum physics, Travis in computer science and Carson in nuclear physics.

My wife Judy also graduated from NWSS and in time worked for the school district for 18 years. Both then and now, our school system has outstanding teachers and programs, and they continue to do great work.

As a school trustee for nine years, I am proud of the many accomplishments achieved to assist the students of New Westminster in their education endeavors.

It was a wonderful experience, and I am humbled by the opportunity to have served the students and residents of New Westminster.

There are many great and courageous people who have put their names forward asking for your support.

The ability to choose your elected officials is an important decision.

By registering your vote, you have a direct say in the education decisions for future generations.

Doug Walker, New Westminster
