Dear Editor:
Re: Letters to the editor: Big labour is not the solution, Jan. 13, and Time to listen to hospital workers, Jan. 11.
Further to recent letters from Messrs. Bremner and Brett, it is sad that a critical concern to the citizens of New Westminster - that being the crisis in health care - takes a backseat to a partisan political attack on the messenger. Judy Darcy proposed compassionate and cost-effective solutions to take the pressure off acute care hospitals in general and emergency rooms in particular. Her background of a career in national and provincial social services and health care gives her some significant experience and reasoned opinion in this matter.
Neither Mr. Bremner nor Mr. Brett offer an alternative other than platitudes and apologist diatribes on behalf of a government which has had 10 years to work on this file. Mr. Brett commented on not wanting a party which stood in the way of innovative solutions, and that the average citizen needed to be represented on this and other matters in Victoria.
Well, the NDP and Ms. Darcy have offered solutions that many in the healthcare field support and that have been discounted by a government with an agenda that has failed. Further, the average citizen has had it with this government for a myriad of reasons. I trust the voters will see this smokescreen for what it is and will vote accordingly.
