Rail tanker safety is a real concern

Dear Editor:

Re: Parked rail tankers raise concern, the Record, Feb. 11. The Quayside resident that raised the concern about parked rail tankers has every right to be concerned about what products are being stored in that  neighbourhood. The reason why those tank cars are parked for extended periods right now is because Southern Rail has locked out the crews that would normally be moving those cars through the neighbourhood. The management staff that are attempting to operate the railway cannot keep up with the demand.

I find Mr. Biln's comments interesting, to say the least. Southern Rail routinely handles non-odourized liquefied petroleum gas and a host of other dangerous goods, not just chlorine as Mr. Biln states. If Mr. Biln is including faulty and leaking valves in his statement about "minor venting," then his statement would be true.
