Paying more for less?

Dear Editor:

I was flabbergasted when I received last week our city's bill for water, sewage and garbage. Flabbergasted because I thought that we would have a relief now that the municipal garbage collection has been reduced in half since January. Before it was every week, now it's only every two weeks. Although the allowed volume of recycling and waste capacities (roughly two big bags fill the bin) is the same as before January, we now have to wait for two weeks before putting our bins on the streets. Only the green bin is collected every week, but, seriously, who does fill that bin every week?

I would like to understand why the City of New Westminster has decided to go forward with this new way of reducing services. Don't get me wrong, we all should reduce our garbage quantities for the sake of environment, but why should we pay more for that? We are all for recycling and reducing our carbon footprint, but how does collecting twice a month instead of once a week help that cause?
