Concerned New Westminster Secondary School parents are encouraged to attend the school's PAC meeting tonight to learn more about budget cuts at the school.

The meeting is being held tonight at NWSS in the library at 7 p.m. Al Balanuik and possibly board chair Jonina Campbell are slated to attend (though Campbell issued an email saying she might not be able to make it due to a coaching commitment).

NWSS parent Stephen Bruyneel has been encouraging parents to attend the meeting to weigh in on the budget woes.

In a November newsletter, NWSS principal Phil Cookson wrote to parents that the district was cutting the school's budget by 90 per cent, but district officials are saying that the school actually had a $7000,000 surplus from the previous year, which means the budget cut didn't take that big of a bite out of the school's budget for books, equipment and computers. (The funds are not used to pay for staff and services.)

When I spoke with Bruyneel last year, when the story broke, he said he had been told that the cuts wouldn't affect this year, but he questioned what they would mean for next year, saying that's what he is really concerned about.
