Dear Editor:

Re: Hopes for heritage demolished, The Record, June 14.

Not everyone was surprised that the sale of 221 Third Ave. resulted in the demolition of the house and planned construction of two new homes. The previous owners of 221 Third Ave. initially purchased a property that consisted of three separate lots. Twenty years ago, one of those lots was sold and a new home built by one of the authors of this letter.

The recent listing of the property was priced at a level that negated the option of keeping the house. Even the real estate sales video highlighted the fact that this listing was two legal and separate lots. It might have been a different story if the house had not straddled the two lots.

As mentioned in your article, if the home had been less central on the property, a prospective owner may have considered updating the old house and building a new one beside it.

We welcome our new neighbour and respect his right to build a home that suits his and his family's needs, within the zoning regulations set out by the city.
