Mortensen wants more detailed budget info

Following her efforts to get more information about the impact of spending cuts and revenue building, trustee MaryAnn Mortensen wants a detailed budget report from staff for the New Westminster school district, which faces a $2.2-million deficit this year.

Mortensen wants the board of education to vote on a motion at next Tuesday's meeting to direct staff to prepare a report for the 2012/13 budget year providing all costs (broken down into individual line-items) and including revenue. She wants the amount budgeted for the year-to-date, the actual costs and the variance between budgeted and actual year-to-date amounts.

She also wants district staff to provide the variance between budget forecast for the year and projected actual costs for the year and a narrative with the reason for the variance, along with measures taken to mitigate the amount of the projected variance.

The information is to be presented to the board in preparation for the Jan. 15, 2013 finance and facilities committee meeting, Mortensen wrote in the motion, which she forwarded to The Record on Thursday.

"As discussed at the last committee meeting, and spoken to by most trustees, this information is necessary for the board to be able to make the decisions in order to deal with the 2012/13 deficit," she wrote in her rationale for the motion.
