Dear Editor:

Re: Time to rethink military spending, Letters to the editor, The Record, Feb. 24.

I never had a chance to meet my uncle, my dad's older brother. He was killed in action in May of 1945 at the age of 19. He and thousands of other Canadians willingly fought and died so that other Canadians, like Bill Zander, could live securely and with the freedom to voice their opinions, however uninformed they might be.

Firstly, Canada did not participate in the war in Iraq as claimed by Mr. Zander. Second, the war in Afghanistan was UNsanctioned and led by NATO, of which Canada is a member.

Contrary to Mr. Zander's claims, Canada has a long and proud military tradition. If it were left to the likes of Bill Zander, we would not even have the ability to fend off ships full of illegal immigrants, let alone patrol our skies. Fortunately, Canada's military enjoys widespread support throughout the country and by all three major political parties.
