Mayor should resign his seat

Dear Editor:

The current mayor of New Westminster is quoted as saying "You've got losers all the time in life who keep looking for things to throw stones at . their information is too wrong for me to let it go too much longer." (Re: BCBusiness, Oct. 5.)

We are not losers, as you declare all the opposition to the office building and other matters of concern to citizens to be.

We, the citizens of New Westminster, are your victims. You disparage the supporters for a proper referendum to borrow $59 million for your office-building folly and other purposes. Our information is not wrong, it is miniscule and far from being complete or useful. We hope that you don't withhold it much longer.

It is apparent your Napoleonic complex is growing out of control.

The legal information supplied to the voters listed several items to be funded by the proposed borrowing. It did not include the $40 million for an office building which was openly confirmed by staff and councillors.

That is all the information we were given. The lack of a formal referendum has enabled you to deny us the truth behind the withdrawal of the original partner. You have failed to respond to requests for the financial analysis of the office project, which is clearly far beyond your mandate.

It is you, Mr. Mayor, with the record of over spending on capital projects and lack of proper planning in so many of them. It is you who has created a burden of debt which will continue to cause higher taxes in a time of recession. It is you who has annually raised taxes.

Your dreams are great but fail the test of financial reality and competence.

Yes, we are losers as well as victims. We in the opposition are the essence of democracy, Obviously your rant against your subjects proves you are not.

I call upon you to take the honourable step and resign from the position you have so dishonoured. Hopefully the other members of council and your financial supporters will ensure that Wayne Wright shows some respect to those he has demeaned.

Ed Linstead, New Westminster
