Dear Editor:
I would like to make a shout-out to the city for improving pedestrian safety in the city. I love living in the uptown part of the city where I can walk to stores, restaurants, banks, etc. But there have been some safety concerns. After years of watching seniors with walkers in front of Century House trying to navigate four lanes at the crosswalk with less time to do so than at Sixth and Sixth, the light now provides more time for people to cross and actually responds more quickly to let pedestrians cross – so our less patient pedestrians have no reason to run across a red light.
This morning, I was delighted to see that one of the most dangerous crosswalks in the city – the one between Tim Hortons and London Drugs – now has a light and signage to indicate that there is a crosswalk there. In the past, I have had numerous close calls in this crosswalk. Now, pedestrians can do their part by not walking out into traffic, by driving their scooters safely – not in the middle of the road – and being aware that when wearing dark clothes on dark, rainy days they need to be extra cautious since drivers may not be able to see them.
Bravo to the city for making New Westminster a more pedestrian-friendly city!
