Letter: New West police need to be part of building accessibility

Enough "us and them" — it's time for "we."

Police members need to be part of the effort to build accessibility in New Westminster, this writer says.

Editor:

I was very disappointed to read about council member Tasha Henderson's resistance to having our police members be part of the accessibility advisory committee.

Building accessibility in our community is important for everyone. To build a strong community, we need to continue to communicate and support each other and create ways of inclusion. This means there needs to be an exchange of information.

Not allowing our police members to be part of the accessibility advisory committee blocks the communication of information that is crucial to making positive changes for people with disabilities and creates a "them and us" situation.

As a community we need to be "we" so that we can continue to develop ways of supporting people who are vulnerable and come to respect differences.

I appreciate the challenging job that our police force does each day and would like to see them involved in each part of our community.
