Letter: New West ethics commissioner sounds admirable, but what would it really mean?

This New West resident questions plans for an ethics commissioner at city hall. Here's why.

Does New Westminster City Hall need an ethics commissioner? This New West letter writer has some questions about the idea.

The Editor:

Re: Ethics commissioner for New West elected officials

Sounds like an admirable position, but we've seen how this works at the federal level, with several complaints levied and nothing done.

First, our new ethics commissioner will basically be chosen by the Community First bloc, which controls more than two-thirds of the vote in council.

Second, since the commissioner will be human, determining if a complaint constitutes “abuse, bullying, intimidating or derogatory behaviour” and if/what the penalty should be for an infraction is likely to be an arbitrary and biased decision. Will a large activist group's complaint be more relevant than a lone resident's?
