The City of New Westminster needs to give taxpayers a break and get back to basics, this writer says.

Editor:

Another excellent letter to the editor from Bill Davis; this time in regard to the outrageous property tax hikes being considered by some of our newly elected city council members, who are also floating the idea of a "food justice" program here in New Westminster, which in and of itself is a noble idea to be sure.

But with so many households just scraping by these days, I think our mayor and council should be thinking of ways to give taxpayers a break and not to ask us to pony up any more cash to the city than is absolutely necessary for tending to the basics, such as fixing our roads and crumbling sidewalks, and working with our police department to help keep this city safe for its inhabitants.

And if there are any members of council who don't want to work with our excellent police services folks, perhaps you will kindly do us all a favour by resigning from council.
