Bike lanes are important, but cyclists using them need to exercise extreme caution when coming up next to a turning vehicle, this writer warns.

Editor:

I agree that bike lanes are an essential part of any growing city and an integral part of trying to curb our emission footprint.

Importantly, though, I would like to remind everyone that we have the worst drivers in the country, and anyone coming up the inside of a vehicle turning should be extra diligent. Turning right now is tantamount to crossing from the middle lane.

As we've seen by the tragic death of a bicyclist hit by a transport truck last year in Vancouver, some drivers are not skilled enough to even deal with regular driving conditions, let alone these new changes.
