Letter: 'Activist' New West council should limit tax increases

Editor: The news that the New Westminster council is considering property tax increases that are more than double the current rate of inflation for the next two years is either fiscally irresponsible or delusional.

A number of projects will be considered at a Feb. 24 public hearing in council chambers.

Editor:

The news that the New Westminster council is considering property tax increases that are more than double the current rate of inflation for the next two years is either fiscally irresponsible or delusional.

This activist council should sharpen their pencils and limit increases to a more acceptable level.

Certainly supporting limited capital budget increases for the city’s aging infrastructure is warranted, but costly programs like the Q2Q shuttle should be scaled back or eliminated. Reconciliation issues (should be) the domain of the senior levels of government and should not be draining council and staff time and resources.
