Is there an easier solution?

Dear Editor:

There has been some controversial conversations concerning the Pattullo Bridge, but never, it seems to me, has been mentioned the possibility of finishing it.

What is there is a perfectly repairable half a bridge, the other half left to be completed when the increase of traffic required it. None of the great and good of the chattering classes have admitted to knowing this. The drawings for the other half exist, the engineering has been done, the cost can be about half of any other method, the land is already there (that's why there's all that funny space at each end), and we do not have to get new architects/engineers involved to create another problem for our city. The routes are already stamped in the ground, the ground plan is formed; that's how cities develop.

If a new bridge is built using present day financing, within a few years we will face the same problem as does the ferry corporation - new debt service and falling use.
