New West Pride 2011 is on this weekend, with this year's theme of "Follow the Rainbow."

The second annual festival is the perfect opportunity for all of us to celebrate the values we hold dear here in the Royal City.

Values like inclusivity, tolerance, diversity, neighbourliness and a good old-fashioned sense of community.

The fun has already begun - with a kickoff event Thursday night and a Stonewall Party scheduled for tonight - but the main festivities are happening tomorrow (Saturday). Everyone is invited to gather for the Hills and Heels fundraiser at 12: 30 p.m., marching up to the steps of city hall for the official proclamation of Pride.

It's heartening to see our own city politicians embrace the occasion - especially in the same year when Toronto mayor Rob Ford made headlines for avoiding an appearance at that city's Pride Parade.

Here in the Royal City, it would seem, our politicians have figured it out - as have our residents.

We know that this festival isn't about politics. It isn't about dwelling on negatives or differences.

It's about rejoicing in who we are - each and every one of us, regardless of sexual orientation, gender, age, race.

It's about joining together to say: Let's recognize each other as neighbours. As friends. Let's build a community we are all proud to be part of.

So what are you waiting for? Join the Hills and Heels walk, then head out to Tipperary Park for the Saturday afternoon festivities, with four hours of entertainment on the Pride Stage. Check out the website at www. royalcitypridesociety.com for all the details.

Now, please excuse us. We must go hunt for our stilettos.
