City is not a business

Dear Editor:

Re: On the trail, by Theresa McManus, The Record, Nov. 4.

It is hard to believe that mayoral candidate James Crosty actually said as quoted in Theresa McManus's column (in reference to parking meter funds going to licensed non-profit child-care facilities) that "We are not in a social program. We have a business to run a city."

If Mr. Crosty's vision of municipal government is that of a business run for profit, then he must disagree with a number of things the incumbent mayor and council did during their current term. For instance:

? Would a business think it is its business to apologize to the Chinese community for past racial discrimination in the city? Mr. Crosty would most likely think not.

? Would a business think it profitable to establish a living wage policy for the employees of New Westminster? Mr. Crosty would most likely think not.

? Would a business think it is its business to undertake a homeless initiative in the community of New Westminster? Mr. Crosty would most likely think not.

If Mr. Crosty thinks a city should be run as a business, then he has no business running a city.
