Candidate 'in it to win it'

Dear Editor: I am writing this letter to dispel a continuing rumour regarding my campaign for mayor of New Westminster. I have no idea who this rumour is being spread by or why some people may think it is true.

Dear Editor:

I am writing this letter to dispel a continuing rumour regarding my campaign for mayor of New Westminster. I have no idea who this rumour is being spread by or why some people may think it is true. I heard this rumour again from a reliable source while dining out at one of my favourite restaurants with my family on Friday, Nov. 4.

The rumour is that I am running for mayor to take votes away from another challenger, namely James Crosty. The rumour goes on to say that I am doing this because I am a friend of Mayor Wayne Wright's. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have stated this publicly on at least two occasions, yet the rumour persists.

I am friendly with Mayor Wright, as I am with James Crosty. The only difference is that in the past I have supported Mayor Wright in his campaigns. Surely we are not so uncivil that we can not be friendly with the opposition. I don't think the voters want that, and I certainly do not. I like to think that I can get along with and work with most anyone.

During the course of my campaign, what I hear most of all is that people want a change in leadership, and I often hear that nine years in office at the municipal level is enough. People want a fresh spirit and a fresh outlook.

I am not the type of person who would have my volunteers, family and friends pound the pavement for hours on end delivering my brochures, erecting signs, etc for a frivolous campaign. Nor would I spend my hard-earned savings to campaign for the fun of it.

The citizens of our city want change at the top, and they want positive change, I am the person to accomplish that.

I do not attack and will not attack any opponent, it's not my style. And voters, please believe this: I am in it to win it!

Vance McFadyen, New Westminster
