Dear Editor:
In the April 13 Record (Mayor supports closer look into TransLink), Matthew Laird states, and I quote "Why is TransLink pushing ahead with replacement of the Pattullo Bridge while Golden Ears bridge operated at a deficit and no business case has been made for a new six-lane bridge into already gridlocked New Westminster."
All this will do is bring thousands more vehicles into town!
Keep the Pattullo Bridge and change it into a two-lane bridge. One lane into New West and one into Surrey. Paint the bridge and re-blacktop, and it'll be fine for many years.
I have driven the bridge every day for the last 30 years without any problems. What both cities must do is enforce the speed limit as people drive like maniacs. The lanes are too narrow and must take up both lanes for larger trucks.
Why are councils so anxious to spend every penny? It doesn't matter what level of government pays, in the long run it is the taxpayer in the end who pays!
By doing what Mr. Laird suggests, cars will leave the Pattullo Bridge and start using alternative routes and underused bridges.
Please learn to listen for a change and leave our money in our pockets!
Louis Luyten, New Westminster
