Variety of events, activities during homelessness week

Homelessness Action Week 2012, which runs until Oct. 13, includes services, meals, movies and more. The week kicked off with Monday's Thanksgiving dinner at the Union Gospel Mission, and was followed by Tuesday's Connect Day at Holy Trinity Cathedral, where people could access a variety of services.

Tours of various housing offerings in New Westminster will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 10 (today) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A movie night is being held at the Hospitality Project on Oct. 10 (today) at 7 p.m., featuring a screening of Celebrate What's Right with the World.

St. Barnabas Anglican Church and Queens Avenue United Church are both holding free lunches on Thursday, Oct. 11.

The New Westminster Homelessness Coalition's fundraising dinner/auction takes place on Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Columbia Theatre. Tickets are $75 and available by calling Lynn Osborn at 604-603-8412 or Dave Brown at 778-288-8887.

Linda Cullen and Bob Robertson of CBC's Double Exposure are the dinner's MCs, and Karen O'Shannacery, executive director of the Lookout society and Order of B.C. recipient, is the guest speaker. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m.

New Westminster's Homelessness Action Week wraps up with a multi-faith prayer service on Friday, Oct. 12 at 6: 30 p.m. at St. Barnabas Church (1010 Fifth Ave.) at 6: 30 p.m. Dinner will be provided by the Sikh community.
