FortisBC is implementing a clean growth innovation fund to help accelerate work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of its strategy to support the transformation to a lower carbon economy.

The afternoon commute through part of New Westminster has been in chaos for several hours.

And all thanks to someone who messed with a natural gas main.

FortisBC crews are responding to a damaged natural gas main caused by a third-party in New Westminster, according to the utility company.

The New Westminster Fire Department had closed McBride Boulevard from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue earlier today.

An update from FortisBC is that two southbound lanes to the Pattullo Bridge and one northbound lane along McBride Boulevard are now open.

“The curbside lane will remain closed while our crews continue to make the necessary repairs safely and as quickly as possible,” read a statement. “We would also like to remind the public that the majority of damages to our system are preventable – always contact BC 1 Call before you dig to obtain information on the location of buried natural gas lines and other utilities.”
