Two New Westminster police officers biked 841 kilometres recently, part of 37 riders in this year’s Cops for Cancer event, which raised $770,000 toward pediatric cancer research.

The event also helps fund Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp and set of year-round programs for children and youths with cancer.

“Cops for Cancer was an experience second to none,” said New West Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Scott, who took part in the ride. “Knowing that we were making a difference gave us the endurance to keep riding despite the wind, rain, sun and hills.”

The other NWPD officer who took part was Sgt. Jason Gelderman.

The group biked throughout the South Coast, including the Sunshine Coast, Powell River, Whistler, Pemberton and Metro Vancouver.

“It was challenging but absolutely worth it,” Scott said.

The NWPD sends two riders to the Cops for Cancer ride each year, and Scott said getting to take part this year was “certainly a highlight of my career.”

“The ride was challenging because of the changing weather and long distances, but absolutely worth it.”
