You need to buy staple grocery items, even in a time of COVID-19 - so why not source what you can from local businesses? That's one of the ideas in a Support Local campaign that's being promoted by the City of New Westminster's working group on business and local economy in the face of the pandemic.

The City of New Westminster has struck a business and local economy working group to help keep the local economy afloat through the COVID-19 pandemic.

That group has started up a Support Local campaign that calls upon local residents to do their best to support local businesses.

Here are seven ways you can do that, courtesy of the campaign:

1. Buy gift cards:

Businesses get the revenue now, and you can shop later.

2. Shop online or by phone:

Some businesses may offering delivery or safe pickup options – phone your favourite business to find out.

3. Order takeout and delivery:

You can still eat from many of your favourite local eateries – you just can’t sit inside. Call your favourite establishment to find out if they have a way you can support them.

4. Source your pantry and supplies:

Buy your necessities of life – baking, groceries and produce – from local businesses whenever you can.

5. Share positivity online:

Write reviews and posts celebrating your experiences with local businesses.

6. Amplify businesses:

Help your favourite local merchants by sharing their social media posts – follow them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, and give them a larger audience by sharing their posts with your friends and followers.

7. Rebook appointments:

If you’ve had to postpone an appointment with your favourite hairdresser, massage therapist or other service provider, try rebooking instead of cancelling outright.
