Some of the folks involved in this year’s Feast on the Fraser event recently toured farms and providers in Langley and Abbotsford. After a one-year hiatus, the re-imagined culinary event was set to return this year with a focus on Indigenous culinary traditions and cuisine – which includes a strong focus on local ingredients.

If you were planning to attend Feast on the Fraser, you’ll have to wait till next year.

In September, Tourism New Westminster announced it had received a $100,000 Canadian Experiences grant from the federal government to put toward a regional Feast on the Fraser event in 2020, with events focusing on Indigenous culinary traditions of communities along the Fraser River. As an appetizer to next year’s event, several smaller events were being planned in New West, Burnaby, Abbotsford and Langley from Nov. 5 to 11.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Tourism New Westminster has decided to scale back Feast on the Fraser activities for this year,” said a statement from Tourism New Westminster. “We are in the midst of re-designing a new culinary celebration, inclusive of Indigenous culture, that connects communities alongside the Fraser River through food and shared territories.”

The statement said Tourism New Westminster is thankful for its partners and sponsors and hopes for their continued support as it develops a re-imagined culinary campaign creating signature events in unique spaces that pair food, fun, arts and entertainment within the Fraser Valley for 2020.

“We are excited about the launch of a new culinary celebration, and will continue to work with our partners and local businesses to showcase mouth-watering culinary experiences to New Westminster in 2020,” said Tracy Eyssens, president of Tourism New Westminster’s board of directors.
