New Westminster residents came together Saturday to collect more than one ton on food for local food bank hubs.

New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian teamed up with New Westminster firefighters to stage a drive-through food drive at the Canada Games Pool site.

“It’s absolutely amazing to see NewWest-Burnaby coming together to donate over 1 ton of food and household items to the local food banks today,” Julian wrote in a Facebook post. “Thank you to New Westminster firefighters for co-hosting this great event with me.”

Members of the New Westminster Soccer Club came out to help, and the event received a big donation from the Masjid al Salaam and Education Centre, which donated 500 pounds of frozen chicken, Julian said, adding that the Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar (Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster) dropped off big donations.

Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also dropped by.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically increased food insecurity issues in communities.
