Young Warlocks win gold at field lax provincials

New Westminster teams won both the under-12 and under-14 provincial Tier 1 field lacrosse championships. The u-12s came back to get the game-winning goal from Axel Bernoe with two seconds left in a 10-9 win over Ridge Meadows in the gold-medal final.

New Westminster teams won both the under-12 and under-14 provincial Tier 1 field lacrosse championships.

The u-12s came back to get the game-winning goal from Axel Bernoe with two seconds left in a 10-9 win over Ridge Meadows in the gold-medal final.

The defending champion u-14s won a fourth consecutive B.C. title, holding off Langley to post a 7-5 victory in the championship title at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West on Sunday.

For u-14 goalie Dylan Sharpe and teammates Nolan Duncan, Owen Ballance, Max Gerhardt, Ryan Wilkinson and Nathan Macedo, it was the fourth provincial gold, along with two previous B.C. titles at u-12.

"That's pretty good," said coach Kevin Ballance. "They'll have to try it again at u-16, but we'll have to wait till next year and that's a long time away."

New West was leading 7-2 before running into penalty trouble late in the game, but held together in the final seven minutes of play, Ballance said.

Gerhardt, at long pole, was New West's game MVP in the final.

"There's a group that is really talented, and the rest of the kids know their positions and played smart," Ballance said.

The u-14s sported a perfect 5-0 record at the B.C.s, including a 7-5 semifinal win over Port Coquitlam.

The u-12s had a relatively easy time of it in preliminary play, including an earlier 11-3 romp over Ridge Meadows.

But the upper Fraser Valley club made a game of the gold-medal final, forcing New West to show its stuff when the chips were down.

"We had to come back twice in the game," said New West coach Rich Catton. "It showed how much heart we have."

The young Warlocks doubled the regular season champion Adanacs 8-4 in the semifinal earlier in the day.

U-12 tournament MVP Nick Hannay, Eric Maas and Will Malcom led the Warlock offence throughout the tournament.

Johnny Edin was in the net for both New Westminster's final games.

The u-12s dominated play in the round-robin, outscoring the opposition 41-8.

"They did all I asked of them. It was pretty impressive for them to comeback considering how young they are," Catton said.

The u-19s fell just short of a bronze medal, losing the Tier 1 consolation final 11-8 to the Adanacs.

"It wasn't that good," said New West coach Drew Duncan. "We finished first in the league. We had high expectations."

New West also lost 10-6 to the eventual provincial runner-up Adanacs 2 in the semifinal matchup.

Final year Drew House had two player of the game honours at the provincials.

Brendan Klyne was stellar on the draws, while Spencer England and Nathan Stewart defended well in front of goalies Rocky Bowman and Tyler Barret.

A fourth New West team, at u-16, also competed at the Tier 1 tourney. The Warlock teens played to identical 9-9 draws against both Pacific Rim and South Fraser.
