WLA hands out awards

Perhaps not surprisingly, the Western Lacrosse Association playoff finalists, the New Westminster Salmonbellies and the Langley Thunder, dominated the league's year-end awards.

Leo Nicholson top goalie trophy winner Tyler Richards joined Salmonbellies teammates Ian Hawksbee and top defender Curtis Manning on the WLA first all-star team.

Rounding out the first-team squad were Victoria's Rhys Duch, second-year Maple Ridge Burrard Curtis Dickson and league MVP Scott Ranger of Nanaimo.

Rookie of the year goalie Brodie MacDonald, and Langley defenders Rob Van Beek and John Lintz were three Thunder players named to the all-second team.

Coquitlam forwards Cory Conway and Dane Dobbie, along with New Westminster's Ilija Gajic, were also named to the second-team all-star squad.

Langley's Rod Jensen was named coach of the year, while the Thunder's Brett Mydske was named the league's unsung hero.

The Burnaby Lakers were handed the Ab Brown trophy as the most sporting team.

Burrard backender Tyler Codron took home the Maitland award for contribution to the team and the game.

Maple Ridge's Bill Hicks, who chaired the board of governors this season, was named the winner of the executive of the year award.
