Meg Wilson was right on point Saturday.
The rest of the Simon Fraser University women’s basketball team were glad to follow her lead.
The fourth-year senior with the Clan delivered a stellar effort, scoring 21 points, six rebounds and six assists as SFU blasted Saint Martin’s Saints 92-61 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Burnaby Mountain.
While the stats were solid, it was in all the other ways Wilson regularly contributes that made the difference, Clan head coach Bruce Langford said.
“She’s dangerous because she can go by people, and she can score inside really nicely,” said Langford of Wilson. “She’s got good finish inside, and she gets a lot of easy baskets off of good steals and going coast-to-coast.”
Attacking the paint in the first quarter, SFU erased an early 4-0 deficit with 11 straight points thanks to Rachel Fradgley’s eight points over the first quarter. Up by seven points after one quarter, they led 48-27 at halftime.
“I thought we came out a little slow in the first couple of minutes, but then we came together in that quarter, came together a little better,” said Langford.
The Clan would put up 31 points in the third quarter to gain complete control.
Fradgley counted 16 points and five rebounds in just 18 minutes, while guard Ellen Kett netted a double-double, scoring 11 points and picking up 13 assists.
For her performance, Wilson was named the GNAC’s women’s basketball Player of the Week, having tallied 35 points over two games, the other a 71-61 win over Seattle Pacific.
