Classic end: Seven-time winner of the West Coast Curling Classic, Kevin Martin in red, won't be back to defend his premier men's title at the Royal City Curling Club after B.C.'s marquis event was cancelled following a fall in the number of competing teams.

The West Coast Curling Classic proved a victim of its own success.

B.C.’s premier men’s curling event, put on for the past 12 years over the Thanksgiving Day weekend by the Royal City Curling Club, was permanently cancelled due to a lack of teams, said club spokesperson Craig Lightbody.

The dominance of big name teams like Kevin Martin of Alberta, who has won the Classic the last three years and seven times in all, has led to fewer teams taking part over the years, added Lightbody.

Last year, just 18 teams, down from a high of 32 rinks in the past, took part in the Classic.

“It’s very unfortunate. It’s not just a one-year thing. It’s done,” said Lightbody.
