The Royal City Westminster United under-14 gold soccer team avenged two earlier defeats to the North Van Fury, winning the Pioneer Cup final on penalty shootouts against the North Shore club.

United scored on all four of its shootout opportunities by leading scorer Markus Zacharuk, Josef Findlay, Shea Joshi and Naoll Degife to win on penalty kicks, 4-2.

Royal City keeper Matthew Buchanan allowed just two Fury markers but got a hand on both shots that got by him.

North Vancouver took the lead in the opening five minutes of the Cup contest on a free kick.

Dieved Penalver tied the score with a shot from just outside the 18-yard box with 13 minutes left in the second half.

With the score knotted at 1-1, the two teams went straight to a penalty shootout.

Westminster United will play Killarney AllStars for the league championship title at Mercer Oval on Saturday. Game time is 10 a.m.

The Royal City boys will also represent the district in provincial playdowns, beginning March 31 against the North Van Fury.
