Hyack Swim Club's Sherry Liu placed a personal-best sixth place in the women's 800-metre freestyle at the recent Canadian Olympic swim trials in Montreal.
The freestyle swimmer stroked a consistent 50-m lap time of approximately 33 seconds to finish sixth overall in 8: 49.51.
Savannah King of Vancouver Dolphins won the event in 8: 30.79, more than three seconds behind Brittany Reimer's national record time.
Liu also placed seventh in the women's 400m on the opening day of the competition. She was 29th overall in the 200m.
Cariboo Hill Secondary student Stefan Milosevic made the B final in the men's 400-m individual medley, placing 12th overall.
The Hyack club swimmer also finished 30th in the 1,500m.
Simon Fraser Aquatics club swimmer, Mariya Chekanovych, made the B finals in both women's 100and 200-m breaststroke.
Chekanovych posted a time of 2: 30.96 to finish in the 11th overall spot at 200m, while clocking a 13th-fastest time of 1: 10.33 in the sprint.
Burnaby's Sean Nugent also made a B final for SFA in the men's 100-m breast, finishing in 12th place overall.
Water polo win
A combined Burnaby schools team won the recent B.C. provincial high school co-ed water polo tournament at Fleetwood Pool in Surrey.
Burnaby South, Burnaby Central, Moscrop and St. Thomas More Collegiate students joined forces to knock off Archbishop Carney 6-5 in the championship final on April 15.
Sever Topan and Maryann Slama led the way with two goals apiece, while Marko Pudar and Margarita Orlova added single markers for the allBurnaby team. Nabil Fani backstopped the win in goal for Burnaby.
The four-school Burnaby collective went undefeated through the 20-team competition, edging the North Shore Eagles 11-10 and a combined St. George's team 12-8 en route to the championship final.
Burnaby, including Katerina Schwab, T.J. Jones, Jenna Melton, Gareth Jones, Amanda Hass, Stewart Crombie, Mackenzie Burns, Riel Ante-Schaefer and Maria Strigoun, also easily defeated Meadowridge, Burnsview/Sands and Garibaldi in preliminary round action.
