Three medals for field lacrosse teams

New Westminster minor lacrosse picked up two silver and one bronze at the B.C. field lacrosse championships in Langley last week

New Westminster field lacrosse picked up three medals at the provincial championships in Langley last week.

The Salmonbellie boys took home the silver medal following a thrilling 16-15 loss in the championship final to Victoria at Willoughby Park on Monday.

The game was played in extremely wet conditions that made play difficult.

Team MVP Connor Robinson, Corey Wong, Mitchell Stokes, Navi Mahal and Mitchell Flintoff scored goals for New West.

Goalie Dylan Sharpe, who won New West’s fair play award, and long poles Tommy Robertson, Andrew Buchanan, Alex Friesen, Jordan McKenzie and Serafino Gentile also shared in the silver medal.

Delta defeated Mission in the u-19 boys’ Tier 2 final.

New West also won a silver in the under-12 girls’ provincial final run in conjunction with the u-19 boys’ finals.

The regular season runner-up lost to Port Coquitlam 11-4 in the championship final.

With just three 12-year-olds on a team of mostly nine, 10 and 11 year olds, New West is looking to the future, said head coach Doug Sweeney.

“It was quite good in very difficult conditions,” said Sweeney. “Our goalie (a game MVP) Mady Morrison was phenomenal. Staying together is a key.”

Heidi Sweeney was named the team’s fair play winner.

New West’s u-15 girls also came away with a medal, earning a bronze behind the fair play coaching of Alex Lund-Murray.

The New Westminster teens defeated Langley 9-5 in the consolation final to place third overall.

Jessica Soenen was the Royal City team’s fair play winner.

Paige Griffin got the fair play nod for the Burnaby team.

Ridge Meadows defeated PoCo in the u-15 final.
