The New West Spartans opened the 2013 track season with a splash of gold

The New West Spartans set four meet records and won seven gold medals at the Van Ryswyk Invitational indoor track and field meet in Kamloops on Feb. 17. Fifteen-year-old Nina Schultz won four medals and set two records in field and track.

Fifteen-year-old Nina Schultz won four medals and set two records in field and track. Schultz won the triple jump with a record leap of 10.85 metres, while also setting a record time of 9.22 in the 60-metre hurdles.

Schultz also won the long jump in 4.78m and the high jump with a 1.55 leap.

Mihailo Stefanovic, 17, was top of the podium in the 60m dash in 7.34 seconds, while also setting meet records with first-place finishes in the 60m hurdles in 8.51 seconds and in the triple jump, with a 12.8m leap. Stefanovic's time in the 60 metre hurdles ranks him sixth in the Canadian Youth ranking system for this event. His triple jump ranks him fourth in the Canadian midget rankings. Schultz and Stefanovic are ranked first in the B.C. Track and Field system in their events.

Schultz, Stefanovic and Spartan teammates Jemal Reta and Bodgen Pavel have been selected by the Canadian Sport Institute's Integrated Performance Sport System 'Road to the Olympics' program.

Douglas College athletes also had a good showing with a gold, a silver and a bronze medal.

Travis Fraser placed first in the 1,500m in a meet record time of 4:18.10. Fraser also finished second in the 3,000m only 2 seconds behind the leader to claim the silver medal. Also running from the Douglas College Running Club was Matthew Battocchio, with a bronze medal in the 800m.

Last year Fraser won silver at the Canadian national cross-country championships for the B.C. junior provincial team.
