St. Thomas More Collegiate won both the boys' and girls' aggregate titles at the Lower Fraser Valley wrestling championships.
The STM Knights took eight individual boys' titles, while the Burnaby independent girls won seven weight classes at the provincial qualifying meet at Burnaby Central last Friday.
STM outpointed runner-up Gleneagle 116-91 in the aggregate standings. Burnaby South was third and New Westminster Secondary in fourth. Burnaby Central finished in seventh place.
The Knights capitalized in the lower weight divisions with Daniel Alphonso, Colby Lantz, Andrew Juni, Joshua Juni and Darthe Capellan all winning in the 54-kilogram and under classes.
Jean-Luc Candolfi and Alessandro Pozzolo also placed third and fourth, respectively, behind Capellan at 54kg.
Massimo Pozzolo at 63kg, Eric Bauer at 70kg and Kevin Marshall at 90kg also placed first in their weight divisions. Nico Repole and Rafal Posypanko were third and fourth, respectivley at 110kg behind winner Kevin Joyal-Hutchings of Burnaby Mountain and runner-up Kaeden Hnatiw of New Westminster.
Jordan Chin led the fourth-place New West team with a title at 84kg.
Joey Foy at 90kg, Billy Collins at plus-110kg and Drew Reimer at 78kg all placed second overall. Han Richard placed third at 78kg.
South won three individual titles, including Melvin Aricaga at 60kg. Safi Sharar defeated Cedric Bihis of Burnaby Central for the title at 57kg. Baldeep Sahota also won the 78kg division for South.
Jimmy Sidhu was second at 84kg, while Denis Ivziku was third at 51kg for South.
Central's Amar Dhesi was the champion in the super-heavyweight division. Alec Shaw placed second at 48kg.
In all, BurWest schools won 14 of 17 weight classes in the boys' divisions.
The Knight girls took seven of the 11 available division titles, outpointing the combined opposition of the remaining top-10 schools with 161 total points.
STM again dominated in the girls' lighter weight classes, with Caileen Corbett at 40kg, Meagan Chow at 43kg, Clarisse Dos Santos at 47kg, Christina Fernandes leading a near-sweep at 54kg, Nicole Depa at 57kg and Natalie Nelson sharing the podium with teammates Ivana Baker and Taylor McIntosh at 60kg. Anna Benevoli also won at 69kg for the Knights.
Ciara Corbett, Vanessa Lloyd and Gemma Lozanh were second through fourth at 51kg. Olivia Padron, Alina Mercado and Livleen Sidhu also placed second in their respective weight classes.
Tatiana Ivens of Central placed second at 69kg, while New West's Emily McLaughlin was third at 57kg.
Other Burnaby/New Westminster district qualifiers included: Tom Spencer, Evan Enriquez, Saib Abdullah, Billy Tengrave, Nathan Punzo, Jessel Guerra Romo, Ryan Rickaby, Nazeeb Omar, Gurpreet Sond, Philip Garabandic, Thomas Pantea, Paul Sosa, Sid Stevens, Gagan Sohol, Hedieh, Sara Brnkac, Hajesmaeel, Natalie Evans, Amanda Cordeiro, Belen Tudela, Rageeba Ali, Amalise Meyer, Aashima Parti and Juliana Casa.
