Some fleet feet carried New Westminster’s Katelyn Stewart-Barnett to first place at the NACAC under-18 and u23 championships in Mexico earlier this month.
The soon-to-enter Grade 11 athlete topped her 2000-metre steeplechase event with a time of 7:15.31, edging out fellow Team Canada member Cecilia Howes’ 7:34.40.
The meet pits junior athletes from North American, Central American and Caribbean nations.
Stewart-Barnett, a student at St. Thomas More in Burnaby, a month earlier captured the B.C. High School junior girls 1500m steeplechase title.
The teen is among a handful of New West athletes who are poised to compete in a few weeks at the 2019 Royal Canadian Legion Youth championships in Sydney, NS. She has also qualified to compete in the high jump as well.
Also expected to compete in Nova Scotia are fellow Royal City Track and Field teammates Ella Foster, in pole vault, and Lauryn Savela, in javelin, as well as St. Thomas More’s Michelle Dadson, in shotput.
