Steelers win but fail to gain ground in Junior B

The Grandview Steelers started the month of February out right with a pair of wins last week.

The Grandview Steelers started the month of February out right with a pair of wins last week.

The Burnaby-based junior B hockey club passed a couple of tough tests, gaining top marks for back-to-back wins against the North Delta Devils and the Abbotsford Pilots.

Last Saturday, Grandview scored three times in the second period to fashion a 5-2 victory over the third-place Devils at Sungod Arena.

Kentaro Tanaka led the way with a first-star, threepoint showing, including a goal in the go-ahead middle frame.

Second star Giancarlo Romano picked up three assists in the win, including a setup on Danny Merth's eventual game-winner late in the second period.

At home, William McGladrey recorded his first shutout of the season, backstopping a 6-0 win over the second place Brittain conference Pilots.

Third star Joel Gaudet got Grandview off to a quick start, assisting on Kyle Golz's opening marker in the first two minutes of play.

Gaudet also tallied his fourth goal of the year to start the middle frame, upping the score to 2-0.

Romano also scored in the second period. The 20year-old Burnaby forward is currently second in team scoring with 25 points.

Grandview finished off the Pilots with goals by first star Karl Schopf, Matt Martin and Joey Santucci. Chris Busto was the game's second star with two assists.

Despite the wins, lastplace Grandview failed to pick up any ground on the fourth-place North Vancouver Wolf Pack.

The North Van club picked up a win over Port Moody and a key 5-4 victory over the Delta Ice Hawks on a game-winning goal from Burnaby's Marco Finucci last week.

With just six games and two weeks left in the regular season, every win is important in catching the Wolf Pack for the final playoff spot.

"We've got to keep winning and our second-last game is against (North Vancouver), so that will be the deciding factor," said Grandview head coach Aldo Bruno.
