Skating hands out section awards

Burnaby elementary student Nam Nguyen won the Skate Canada competitive skate athlete award for an uprecendented sixth time at the B.C. section athlete awards dinner on Saturday.

Burnaby elementary student Nam Nguyen won the Skate Canada competitive skate athlete award for an uprecendented sixth time at the B.C. section athlete awards dinner on Saturday.

Nguyen, a four-time national champion including the Canadian junior champ at just 12 years of age last season, was again the winner of the award, which he has called his own since 2007. This year, Nguyen placed seventh overall in his first-ever national senior men's competition.

The ice dance team of Danielle Wu and Burnaby Winter Club's Spencer Soo won the B.C. Youth Promise team award.

National bronze medallist Kelsey Wong and Canadian pre-novice champion Julianne Deslaurier picked up the individual promise awards.

Burnaby centre of excellence coach and Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame winner Joanne McLeod won a 10th sectional competitive coach award of excellence, while Nicole Collins was named coach of the year and Regan Taylor of Maple Ridge won the recreational coach award.

Laura Carr of Kelowna was the national winner of the Skate Canada officials award of excellence. Joanne Brandon of the White Rock/Sth. Surrey club also won an official award.

Other winners included Dogwood award winner Dominic Verhelst and skaters award of achievement recipient Robert Velhelst, both of Beaver Valley.

Louise Ferguson and her late husband Dave received the section's lifetime achievement award.

Caitlin Jarvis won the STARskate athlete award; Lela Krotz was the Canskater of the year; Cathy McCormack was the adult skater of the year; Debbie Murphy received the participation award; Sally Rehorick earned the coaches choice award; Melissa Houle won the Elizabeth Swan memorial award; Bev Vigor was chosen for the committee chairman award; Debbie Tomsic took home the program assistant award; and Janice Hunter was selected the section's volunteer award of excellence winner.
