Simon Fraser University chalked up two road wins to remain in second place in the Great Northwest women’s basketball conference.

The Clan avenged an earlier home loss to last-place Central Washington, knocking off the 1-12 Wildcats 75-61 on Feb. 6.

SFU then improved its conference record to 9-4 following a 75-57 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.

Senior guard Kia Van Laare came off the bench with 10 points, including three three-pointers to spark the Clan women.

Junior Erin Chambers led the winners with a game-high 21 points.

“I think we were better defensively,” said SFU head coach Bruce Langford in an SFU release. “We were better in Central defensively than we had been. I thought we were better defensively today than we’ve been. We had 36 defensive boards. We contested a lot of shots, which made for a lot of boards.”

Meg Wilson posted her second consecutive double-double, scoring 13 points and adding a game-high 14 rebounds.

Against Central Washington, Wilson put up 12 points and a game-best 12 boards.

Wilson also got praise. along with teammates Chelsea Reist and Rebecca Langmead for their tough defence from Langford.

“This was probably one of our better games from our bigs,” said Langford. “(CWU) have an outstanding rebounder and scorer, and we held her to eight points. They all did a good job taking away her (shot).”

Reist was four-for-four from the floor and 11 points, while Langmead chipped in with nine points and three blocked shots.

The win left SFU in a tie for second place with Western Washington.

The Clan return home this week against Western Oregon on Thursday and an all-important matchup with Saint Martin’s in the final home game this season on Saturday.
