The SFU Clan women's rugby team found out just how good the Velox Valkyries of Victoria are.
The top-ranked Valkyries travelled to Burnaby Mountain on Saturday and handled SFU 38-0.
The SFU women had played in division one previously before making the move up to the premier league.
The team played valiantly but couldn't overcome their more experienced and talented opponents.
"There's a reason they're number 1 in the league," said SFU wing and fullback Adrianna Spyker. "We have a lot of newer players so they learned how far we have to go to get to their level.-We played a good game, but Velox deserved their win."
Spyker said SFU made it difficult for Victoria to break through the line and forced the Valkyries to earn their points.
"We fought hard and were able to hold up against Victoria's strong scrums," said Spyker.
SFU's Sarah Byers, with multiple direct and strong runs, and Amy Grant, with her hard aggressive play, were recognized by Victoria for Women of the Match.
Following the women's game, the SFU men hosted the Vancouver Kats, losing 29-17.
Mike Boleak scored twice, and Sean Weston added a try in the losing effort.
