SFU Clan extends winning streak

The Simon Fraser University softball team extended its winning streak to seven games by winning all three games it played at the SFU Invitational Tournament at Beedie Field this weekend.

The Simon Fraser University softball team extended its winning streak to seven games by winning all three games it played at the SFU Invitational Tournament at Beedie Field this weekend.

The Clan beat the University of Great Falls Argonauts twice, 7-1 on Saturday and 11-1 on Sunday, before defeating the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 80 to cap a perfect weekend.

"We needed to come out and play strong this weekend," SFU catcher and Burnaby resident Brittany Ribeiro said in a press release.

"The pitchers made my job easy. They threw hard and they hit their spots."

Clan ace Cara Lukawesky saw her first action of the weekend against UBC on Sunday afternoon, pitching five shutout innings and allowing just two hits to improve her record to 13-3.

In the Clan's first game on Sunday, Kelsie Hawkins got her second start of the weekend against the Argos, allowing just one earned run in four innings of work to pick up her eighth win of the season.

The Clan offence scored early and often, with five runs in the first and another five in the second inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead after two innings.

"This morning's game was tough," said Ribeiro. "We had to be here early to clear the snow and get the field ready so I think getting both wins today showed the mental toughness of our team."

The Clan opened the weekend with Hawkins allowing only six hits in SFU's 7-1 victory.

Great Falls split a set with the UBC Thunderbirds, winning 5-3 on Sunday after losing 12-4 on Saturday.

Rain on Saturday afternoon forced a cancellation of SFU's first scheduled game against UBC.

The Clan travel to Monmouth, Oregon this weekend to meet the Western Oregon Wolves in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
