Seven alum to Olympic trials

Seven Douglas College alumni will be competing for a spot on Canada's Olympic wrestling team at team trials in Winnipeg on Dec. 16 and 17. Aso Palani and Frank Mensah will both be competing at 55 kilograms.

Seven Douglas College alumni will be competing for a spot on Canada's Olympic wrestling team at team trials in Winnipeg on Dec. 16 and 17.

Aso Palani and Frank Mensah will both be competing at 55 kilograms. John Pineda will contest the 60 kg weight class.

All three are former National Collegiate Wrestling Association champions while attending Douglas.

Two-time Douglas College athlete of the year Travis Cross will be seeking a spot on the national team at 84 kg.

Arjun Gill and Manjot Sandhu will be wrestling head-to-head at 96 kg for a spot on the Olympic team.

Amanda Gerhart will be competing at 55 kg at the women's national team trials.

Winners at the Canadian trials will represent Canada in international qualifying meets for a berth into the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England.

Cross is the only one of the above wrestlers to have previous Olympic experience, having represented Canada at the 2008 Games in Beijing, China.

The Canadian team will be led by former Douglas head coach Dave McKay.
